Winston Rodney (nacido el 1 de marzo de 1945), más conocido como Burning Spear, es un músico y cantantejamaicano de roots reggae. Como muchos otros cantantes jamaicanos de reggae, Burning Spear es conocido por sus mensajes Rastafari.
Rodney nació en Saint Ann's Bay, Saint Ann, Jamaica, como Bob Marley y Marcus Garvey; ambos tuvieron una gran influencia en la vida de Rodney. Garvey por su filosofía, la cual Burning Spear abrazó con agrado, y Marley porque le ayudó directamente a empezar en el mundo de la música. Пожалуй,ни у кого из реггей-музыкантов больше не было столь успешной, плодотворной и стабильной творческой карьеры: начав музыкальную деятельность ещё в 1969 году Burning Spear выпустил около 30-ти альбомов и дал огромное количество концертов во многих странах мира...
Само имя 'Burning Spear' пришло из Африки: под таким именем был известен африканский борец за свободу и первый глава независимой Кении Jomo Kenyatta,а в 1969 году на Ямайке таким же псевдонимом решил воспользовться начинающий реггей-музыкант.
В том же 1969 году Burning Spear записывает свою первую песню-Door Peep на легендарной Studio One,а в 1973 году там же выходит его первый альбом,названый просто 'Burning Spear'. Двумя годами позже также на Studio One записывается второй альбом 'Rocking Time',после выхода которого Burning Spear прекратил сотрудничество со Studio One и заключил контракт с Island Records-известной студией,выпускавшей альбомы многих знаменитых реггей-исполнителей, в том числе Боба Марли.
В 70-е годы на Island Records выходят три известнейших альбома Burning Spear:'Man In The Hills', 'Marcus Garvey' и 'Garvey's Ghost'(даб-версия альбома 'Marcus Garvey').Эти альбомы сделали Burning Spear известным на международной арене и стали, своего рода, 'фирменным знаком' артиста.
Стилистика Burning Spear всегда привлекала внимание как фанатов,так и музыкантов практически всех направлений музыки.В 1991 году Burning Spear становится единственным реггей-музыкантом, принявшим участие в трибьюте Grateful Dead для которого он записал песню 'Estimated Prophet',а в 1997 году на альбоме 'Appointment With His Majesty' записывает песню Play, Jerry, Play посвящённую лидеру Grateful Dead Джерри Гарсия.Этот альбом был удостоен в США премии Грэмми.
Тексты своих песен Burning Spear,в основном, посвящает растафарианству, делая акцент на пропаганде идей Маркуса Гарви-одного из основных идеологов движения, стоявшего у его истоков: 'Всё,что я делаю в моей музыке, относится к Гарви. И я делаю это для всех людей в мире,поэтому каждый может услышать то, что я хочу сказать...Каждая частица философии Гарви очень важна!' К этому следует добавить,что вырос Burning Spear на Ямайке в районе St. Ann,там же где Гарви и Боб Марли.
